Germany’s Christian Democrats party has proposed doubling taxes on
domestic flights in an effort to help reduce CO2 emissions.
The proposal also notes that engines not reliant on fossil fuels would exempt from the tax.
“We will invest, together with the aviation industry, to make electric-powered flight standard for short-haul flights and to create synthetic fuel to achieve climate-neutrality on medium- and long-haul flights,” states the proposal, according to the BBC.
Climate scientists slam easyJet for creating shortest mainland UK flight: ‘Pointless waste of carbon’
EasyJet will begin flying between Birmingham and Edinburgh, a distance of just 245 miles, 13 times a week from 29 March 2020, while Virgin Atlantic has revealed plans to launch 12 new domestic routes from London Heathrow (subject to slot availability when the controversial third runway opens).
British airlines launching routes that are largely already connected by rail.
The carrier will cut down from five flights a day to four from 29 March 2020, swapping one flight for seat capacity onboard a Thalys train.
However, KLM passengers have been promised that the rail option will match the service they would receive travelling by plane.
It’s part of the airline’s long-term plan to reduce the number of flights between Brussels and Amsterdam and to gradually replace short-haul hops with rail services – providing the train can match the speed, reliability and comfort of air travel.
“Intermodal transport involving trains and planes remains a complex and challenging business,” said KLM president and chief executive Pieter Elbers.
From carbon offsetting to daytime journeys – 10 ways to ‘fly greener’
The aviation industry accounts for around two per cent of global carbon emissions. This, you might argue, is not a huge amount – certainly not compared to energy supply (26 per cent), or agriculture (14 per cent).
