Many struggle to understand why Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat chose to make sustainable tourism the centerpiece agenda of the Department of Tourism (DOT). They argue that our visitor count is still too low to worry about sustainability.

Our 8.2 million visitors is but half of Indonesia’s and a fifth of Thailand’s. Certainly, before we talk about sustainability, we ought to build our numbers first.

In the wake of mass-tourism disasters that sparked the temporary closure of holiday hotspots, one Southeast Asian destination is taking sustainability seriously in a bid to protect its future: the Philippine island of Bohol.

While the island prepares for a tourism boom, its residents are keen to ensure it does not become a victim of its own success.

“We do not want to be another Boracay,” says my tour guide, Cecile Visarra, during a recent five-day visit. I was keen to discover some of the eco-tourism initiatives Bohol wants to be known for.

The announcement was a bombshell: the Philippines’ most visited island would close for a six-month environmental cleanup. Sloppy beach parties had devastated one of the world’s most beautiful sanctuaries.

But after some serious TLC, this island paradise with famously intense sunsets has returned more radiant than ever.

BUCKINGHAM Palace have advertised for a new travel chief to ensure the Queen and other royals use “efficient” and “cost effective” flights.

The role vacancy – which will have a £85,000-a-year salary – comes in the wake of the storm over Harry and Meghan using private jets.

He once dismissed climate change as ‘science fiction’, but Jeremy Clarkon has had a change of heart after seeing its impact for himself.

However, he has admitted having an abrupt change of heart after a “graphic demonstration of global warming” while boating across Cambodia for Amazon TV show The Grand Tour.
